Titus: A Blueprint for the Believer

How a believer lives in the church and in the world.

A blueprint for living prepared

Titus 2:9-15
9 Slaves must always obey their masters and do their best to please them. They must not talk back 10 or steal, but must show themselves to be entirely trustworthy and good. Then they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive in every way.
11 For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. 12 And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, 13 while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. 14 He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.15 You must teach these things and encourage the believers to do them. You have the authority to correct them when necessary, so don’t let anyone disregard what you say.

TITUS IS ENCOURAGING TRAITS SUCH AS FAITHFULNESS, RESPECTFULNESS, DIGNITY, AND SELF-CONTROL.

Today we have a Two part sermon
1st - we are going to address slaves which I believe we can relate to modern day employees or workers…
2nd - We will talk about how after Paul tells us the way we should live (Older Men, Older Women, Younger Women, Younger Men, and Slaves) we will look at the Grace that makes it possible…

9 Slaves must always obey their masters and do their best to please them. They must not talk back 10 or steal, but must show themselves to be entirely trustworthy and good. Then they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive in every way.

This is not the only place that Paul has addressed slaves or servants. He has address them before in first Timothy Ephesians and Colossians. Paul had a heart for the slaves and was convinced that if they lived in honored Christ that they could reach their masters.  Again, I believe we can make this applicable to employees or workers of today. I believe that we are called to be great workers so that we can make the teaching of Jesus Christ attractive to others.

I.  3 things Workers must do to make the teaching of Jesus attractive
Obey their Boss - Ephesians 6:5–7 (NLT): Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. 6 Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart. 7 Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

Control their tongue - James 1:19 19 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

Last sermon we talked about HOW we conduct ourselves. How do we talk about others when they are not there. Do we honor others and our bosses. Do we handle problems by going to them or gossiping about them?

Be trustworthy - Prov. 28:6 Better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and rich.
Luke 16:10 “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.11 For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.

How do we do these things that Paul was telling Titus the people of Crete need to follow: it’s only though grace.

II.  The Grace that makes living for Jesus Possible

"GRACE IS NOT JUST FORGIVENESS. GRACE IS ALSO THE EMPOWERMENT TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT." - JOHN PIPER

1.Past Grace
11 For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.

EPHESIANS 2:8-9 8 God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can take credit for this; it is a gif from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done so none of us can boast about it.

2. Present Grace
12 And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God,

God's grace does not just redeem us, but it also reforms us, and rewards us as we grow in him.

Wycliffe Commentary: Grace saves, but also teaches and trains in sober and godly living

3. Future Grace
13 while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed.

1 PETER 1: 13  So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.

This future grace gives us a hope and should give us a since of urgency to share the grace we have already received.

4. A Living Grace
14 He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.

5.  Continued teaching Grace
15 You must teach these things and encourage the believers to do them. You have the authority to correct them when necessary, so don’t let anyone disregard what you say.

So all of this is so that we can receive grace, teach grace, live grace, see grace, and bring grace to others
