Titus: A Blueprint for the Believer

How a believer lives in the church and in the world.

A blueprint for things the church needs to deal with.

Titus 1:10-16
10 For there are many rebellious people who engage in useless talk and deceive others. This is especially true of those who insist on circumcision for salvation. 11 They must be silenced, because they are turning whole families away from the truth by their false teaching. And they do it only for money. 12 Even one of their own men, a prophet from Crete, has said about them, “The people of Crete are all liars, cruel animals, and lazy gluttons.”[a] 13 This is true. So reprimand them sternly to make them strong in the faith. 14 They must stop listening to Jewish myths and the commands of people who have turned away from the truth. 15 Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.

Things the church needed to deal with

Legalism & Tradition  vs10
For there are many rebellious people who engage in useless talk and deceive others. This is especially true of those who insist on circumcision for salvation.

Teaching that is not Proper  vs11

They must be silenced, because they are turning whole families away from the truth by their false teaching. And they do it only for money.

Titus 3:10-11 If people are causing divisions among you, give a first and second warning. After that, have nothing more to do with them. 11 For people like that have turned away from the truth, and their own sins condemn them.

Notice it says that these people are doing it for money and if we remember Titus 1:7 says they must not be dishonest with money.

This is a protection thing, you protect because you love.. And when we correct we should  also do it out of love.

Norms of the culture vs12

Even one of their own men, a prophet from Crete, has said about them, “The people of Crete are all liars, cruel animals, and lazy gluttons.”

Correcting others  vs13

This is true. So reprimand them sternly to make them strong in the faith.

Hebrews12:5-6 And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said, “My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. 6 For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”

Doctrinal myths  vs14

They must stop listening to Jewish myths and the commands of people who have turned away from the truth.

1 John 4:1 Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.

Understand purity  vs15

Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted.

Romans 3:19-20  Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God. 20 For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.

Mark 7:15 It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.

Lifestyles that denies Jesus Christ vs16

Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.
