The Sermon on the Mount
Basic Christian Living #9

Matthew 5:13–16 NLT
Be Salty - Stay Lit

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Salt — influencing the world through preservation and purity
Light — influencing the world through truth and visible goodness

We believe that salvation produces real transformation that impacts the world around us.
If you’re really saved you will be changed, we will see fruit…

I. The Christian as Salt –  (v.13)
“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

Salt in the ancient world served three purposes:
1. Preservation
2. Flavor - Psalm 34:8 Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!
3. Purity

II. The Christian as Light (v.14)
14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

III. The Christian Must Not Hide the Light (v.15)
15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.

IV. The Christian’s Good Works (v.16)
16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
