The Sermon on the Mount
Basic Christian Living #8

Matthew 5:10-12
One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, 2 and he began to teach them.
3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
4 God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice,  for they will be satisfied.
7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.
9 God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.
10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

Reminder:  Blessed (makarios) - The word “blessed” means a deep joy inside. It is not just getting good things on the outside. It is a happiness that comes from God living in you.

Review:
Blessed are those who are poor in spirit…. Those who are totally bankrupt before God and see their need for Him
Blessed are those who Mourn…. Those who mourn over there sins against God will be blessed
Blessed are the meek… Meekness is not weakness, it is Strength under control of the Holy Spirit
Blessed are those that Hunger and thirst for Righteousness….  We should be hungry for more of Jesus, trusting that He will always fill those who come to Him.
Blessed are the Merciful…. You cannot receive mercy if you do not show mercy.
Blessed are the Pure in Heart…The undivided heart will see God working in their lives.
Blessed are the Peace Makers… Peace begins with Jesus… Peace grows… Peace requires work.

I. Persecution is real (v.10)
2 Timothy 3:12  Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
John 15:18-20.  “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. 19 The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. 20 Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you.

II. Character Assassination is real (v.11)
God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.

Isaiah 48:10 I have refined you, but not as silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering.

III. Our Rewards are real (v.12a)
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 16 That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. 17 For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

Persecution becomes evidence that:
You belong to the Kingdom.
You walk in the prophetic tradition.
You are aligned with Christ.

IV. The Pattern is real (v.12b)
