The Sermon on the Mount
Basic Christian Living #6

Matthew 5
One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes
3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
4 God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.
7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.

Reminder:  Blessed (makarios) - The word “blessed” means a deep joy inside. It is not just getting good things on the outside. It is a happiness that comes from God living in you.

Review:
Blessed are those who are poor in spirit…. Those who are totally bankrupt before God and see their need for Him
Blessed are those who Mourn…. Those who mourn over there sins against God will be blessed
Blessed are the meek… Meekness is not weakness, it is Strength under control of the Holy Spirit
Blessed are those that Hunger and thirst for Righteousness….  We should be hungry for more of Jesus, trusting that He will always fill those who come to Him.
Blessed are the Merciful…. You cannot receive mercy if you do not show mercy.

I. What Does “Pure in Heart” Mean?
The Greek word for pure is *katharos* — means clean and not mixed with anything else.

II. The Problem of the Heart
* Psalm 51:10 — “Create in me a clean heart, O God.”
* Jeremiah 17:9 — “The heart is deceitful above all things.”
* Acts 15:9 says God purified their hearts by faith.

III. How Does the Heart Become Pure?

Titus 3:5 — he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.

In our theology, we speak of:

1. **Prevenient grace** – God drawing us.
2. **Justifying grace** – God forgiving us.
3. **Sanctifying grace** – God cleansing and perfecting us in love.

When the heart is purified:
* Pride is replaced with humility.
* Envy is replaced with thankfulness.
* Anger is replaced with love.
* A divided heart becomes fully devoted to God.

James 4:8 says, “Purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
1 Thessalonians 5:23: “May the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely.”
