The Power of Prayer
James 5:13-20

13 Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. 14 Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.
16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. 17 Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! 18 Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.
19 My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back, 20 you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back from wandering will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.

Pray when you are Suffering vs 13a
13a Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray.

Pray When you are Super vs 13b
13b Are any of you happy? You should sing praises.

Don’t just pray when things go bad… Pray & Praise God when things are super and you happy…. Worship him in Song…

Pray when you are Sick vs 14
14 Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord.

First remember sickness comes from original Sin… Just because your sick doesn’t mean you have sinned but it could happen as well…

Notice it says, “call for the elders”…  Plural… In Matthew 18:19-20 Jesus says, “I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. 20 For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

1 Samuel 16:13 So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on.

Praying for the sick, Laying on of hands, and anointing with oil is nothing new here in James… when Jesus sends out the twelve it says in  Mark 6:12-13 So the disciples went out, telling everyone they met to repent of their sins and turn to God. 13 And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people, anointing them with olive oil.

And when Jesus sent out the 72 he told them in Luke 10:8 “If you enter a town and it welcomes you, eat whatever is set before you. 9 Heal the sick, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you now.’

In Exodus 15:26 Gos says, “for I am the Lord who heals you.”  Jehovah Rapha (The Lord That Heals)

Matthew 8:16-17 it says, “That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick. 17 This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said, “He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases.”

He was Referring to:  Isaiah 53:4-5 Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins!
5 But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.

The word sorrow in Hebrew means pain or sickness…

Pray with Sureness vs 15
15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.

Hebrews 11:1 Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.

Romans 12:3…Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

Paul put it this way: Ephesians 2:8 (NIV) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God

Matthew 9:5-6 Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’? 6 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man[a] has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”

“He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases.”
