The Apostles Creed

Apostles Creed  - The Forgiveness of Sins

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit; Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate; Was crucified, died and buried; He descended into Hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven; And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy catholic Church, the Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen.

This phrase, the forgiveness of sins, is the hinge upon everything before it in the apostles creed, and everything behind it in the apostles creed.

Psalm 130 From the depths of despair, O Lord, I call for your help. 2 Hear my cry, O Lord.  Pay attention to my prayer. 3 Lord, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? 4 But you offer forgiveness, that we might learn to fear you. 5 I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word. 6 I long for the Lord more than sentries long for the dawn, yes, more than sentries long for the dawn.  7 O Israel, hope in the Lord; for with the Lord there is unfailing love.  His redemption overflows. 8 He himself will redeem Israel from every kind of sin.

Romans 3:23-26 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, 26 for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

1.   Why do I need forgiveness?
Ps 130: 3 Lord, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive?

Romans 3:23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

2. God offers forgiveness?
4a But you offer forgiveness…

Romans 3:24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

3. What happens when we are forgiven?
4b …that we might learn to fear you.

Romans 3:25-26 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin.
