This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ.
I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior.
2 May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.

The Three A’s to begin 2 Peter

I. The Addresser
2 Peter 1a This letter is from Simon Peter…
“And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18 NKJV

Let’s Remember who Peter was:
An Apostle who once was a fisherman
Matthew 4:18 One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living.

An Apostle that Jesus Shaped
Matthew 4:19 Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”

An Apostle who received the Keys
Matthew 16:18-19 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”

An Apostle who became the Chief Apostle
He was first called First listed (Matthew 10:2)
The first to declare Jesus as Messiah (Matthew 16:16)
The first one who preached on the day of pentecost in which the Holy Spirit came upon them. (Acts 2)

Acts 2:14  Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this.

An Apostle who denied Jesus
Luke 22:60-62 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.61 At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.” 62 And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.

An Apostle who was crucified
John 21:18  “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.”

An Apostle who wrote two books of the Bible
2 Peter 1 This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ.

An Apostle who was a Slave
2 Peter 1-2 This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ.

The Greek word here is doulos which means one who was in entire bondage to another.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

II. The Addressed
2 Peter 1:1b  I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior.

III. The Acknowledgement
2 May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.

a. What is grace?

Grace is the unmerited or undeserved favor of God.

Romans 3:23-24 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT 8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

b. What is peace?

Greek - Eirene- harmonious relationships between men; Rest, Quietness

Is 32:17-18 And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever.18  My people will live in safety, quietly at home. They will be at rest.

c. What is the knowledge of God?

Colossians 1:9-10 So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.
